I think a person's position depends highly on how they view horses as in are they pets or livestock. The sad fact is that with poor breeding practices and even worse the lack of responsible ownership education out there we will continue to have horses that are unwanted and ill cared for. Landrieu has been involved in pushing these types of bills for many years now, AQHA typically sends an email out when she is doing it again. As of right now the slaughter market is essentially nonexistent in the US. It has effected the number of horses that end up starving to death because there is no market for them. Too many people will buy a horse with no concept of the actual cost of maintaining the health of the horse. In the past the slaughter market has been where many of these horses go. The majority of Americans find that idea of eating horse meat repulsive (as I do), but in essence that is a cultural idea. I can't say that I am completely opposed to the market as it is a 'livestock' market. I do feel that there could be better regulation of it however. Ultimately until potential and current horse owners/breeders are better educated on horse ownership we will continue to have serious issues with horses that are mistreated and unwanted.
